I picked up this Speak at a flea market for $5 with batteries. That's where the cool part ends.

Unlike the other Speak and XXX's, the Speak and Music is a pain in the ass. Straight bends provided little except for crashing. After some meaningful, but time-consuming probing around, I added some inline components (small value resistors and capacitors) and was able to come up with some useful bends.

This box still isn't very playable live since it crashes a lot, but I've recorded and sampled bits of its glitches.

If I come across another one of these, I'll save my $5.

Bending tip: add small-value caps (.47uf and similar) or resistors in line.

Circuit Bending

No instrument is safe. No toy left unbroken! The quest for new sounds has led me to this - circuitbending. Also known as taking electronic devices apart and rewiring their guts in order to make bizarre, mutant noises that were never intended by the original designers. more

circuit bent software synthesizer using Reaktor

A circuit bent soft synth? Hell yes! I (ab)used Reaktor and created a circuit bent software synthesizer. I've been working on this off and on for over a year. Now, after many refinements, it's ready for the world.

And you can get it FREE! more

Tape Destruction
