Below is a picture of what was the living room of my 2 bedroom Tampa apartment from 1993 to 1996. Lots of gear and wires (not all of it pictured here). Back then the studio was based around a primative Pro Tools system, a Mackie 24*8 mixer, and JBL monitors.

Today all of this and plenty more can be done on a used laptop! We've come a long way in a short time.

Recording studio in 2006 - Michael Oster on a laptop computer
edirol r09 review

Left: Me and my studio in early 2006. What's changed? Plenty. My studio's shrinking as computer processing accelerates. More and more of my work is being done on a laptop!

Today, I can carry well over 10 times the power of my entire 1993 studio in a backpack.

In 5 years, 50 times the power of my 2006 "backpack" studio will fit in something the size of a cell phone (thank you nanotechnology!).
